ABOUT THE CAR

In January, 1964, the Mini graduated from a “secretary’s car” to a motorsport legend. Paddy Hopkirk and co-driver Henry Liddon took the small British saloon to victory in the Monte Carlo Rally, besting significantly more powerful - and prestigious - rivals.

In 1964, a team from the British Motor Corporation arrived at the Rally with a handful of Minis - the more powerful Cooper S model developed by race car designer, John Cooper. Still, with just 90 bhp, on paper, the Mini Cooper S was no match for rivals with three and four times the power. The Mini would prove that outright power could be beat with superior handling. The Monte Carlo Rally featured rough country roads, narrow mountain passes, tight corners, and - in 1964 - lots of snow. The Mini’s small size, light weight, wide track and front wheel drive would all be winning advantages in these conditions.

The Rally’s penultimate stage, known as the “Night of the Long Knives” for its grueling conditions and subsequent high attrition rate, finished with the Hopkirk/Liddon car in the overall lead. The rally would end the next day with a sprint around Monte Carlo. Hopkirk hustled his Mini Cooper S through the twisty narrow streets, staying in the lead all the way to victory. It was a classic David versus Goliath moment that would cement the Mini’s place in history.
